Description
Veteran of many Historic Rallies with numerous Class wins; new 1,098cc
engine with 1,275cc head in 2018; stainless steel exhaust; electronic ignition;
Brantz rally meter; current owner 27 years; driven to the sale
First registered in November
1948, this Morris 8 Series E comes with a large and interesting history file
which will take the new owner many happy hours to
digest.
The buff logbook shows that it
was first owned by a Mrs Marguerite Annett of Somerset who kept it for at least
20 years by which time she and the car were resident in Malvern. Our vendor
acquired the Morris in 1998 and has spent a great deal of time and money turning
it into a somewhat unlikely Historic Rally weapon.
It has competed in
many events over the years and won a good deal of silverware too, as you can see
in the photos. The full extent of the work carried out during our vendor’s
28-year ownership is far too detailed to list in full here, but is amply covered
in many dozens of invoices on file. There were even more invoices but sadly many
of these got lost when our vendor relocated from France to England a few years
ago.
For instance, in 2018 it
was fitted with a brand new 1,098cc engine which our vendor was
lucky enough to find at an auction of Post Office garage equipment in
Bridgwater, along with a reconditioned gearbox. The engine now has
a 1,275cc head and HS4 1.5” carb with alloy inlet, electronic ignition,
sports coil etc.
Other highlights include beefed up brakes and
suspension; stainless steel exhaust; complete re-wire and 12v conversion; Brantz
Rally Meter; gyroscopic compass; fire extinguisher; engine kill-switch plus much
else besides. It even has air conditioning – well, an opening front windscreen
at any rate which does the job fine!
As you can see in the photos,
it has oodles of charming patina and is a proper sleeper – remove the rally
stickers in the windows and no-one would ever guess that this thing has actually
completed many gruelling events both here and on the Continent, including the
Monte Carlo Winter Challenge in 2003, driving all the way there and
back.
Driven to the sale from
Bromyard (not much of a test by comparison!), it has been starting promptly and
running well as we have moved it around on site, with healthy 45psi oil
pressure.
Our vendor also has tons of
useful spares for the car which he will be happy to pass on to the new owner,
provided it hits the reserve.
It comes with lots of
handbooks, maintenance manuals and period brochures, plus one of the oldest MOTs
we have ever seen. It’s quite hard to read but looks like it was issued in
November 1964, only four years after this test was introduced on a voluntary
basis. There are also 12 other old MOTs from 1966 -
2012.
Affectionately known as Morry,
this pepped-up Eight looks like a lot of fun at the modest guide price
suggested.
