Description
Only 88,200 miles indicated; well-maintained and in regular use; 1.8
carburettor engine; a tidy and usable example of this classic '80s
saloon
Supplied new
by Royal Ascot Garage of Berkshire in January 1988, this BMW 316 Automatic is a
post-1987 facelift model with the 1.8 M10 carburettor engine rated at 89bhp
which made it good for a top speed of 110mph with a 0-60 time of 12 seconds for
the manual version.
Finished in black with a
grey cloth interior and power steering, it has covered 88,200 miles in the hands
of six former owners. While there is no early history with the car, there are
lots of bills from 2010 onwards to show regular upkeep and servicing since then.
Earlier this year it was fitted with a new LH
front wishbone, a new battery and a new rocker cover gasket following adjustment
of the tappet gaps. Last year it had various new gaskets to fix some oil leaks,
new cam follower, oil and filter, fuel pump and propshaft centre bearing
carrier. It looks to have been fitted with a new carb and a K&N air filter
at some point in the recent past, but the original air box and carb are
included. Much of the exhaust looks to be stainless steel. All five green
service indicators are still illuminated so it should not need another service
for a fair while yet.
Eleven old MOTs show
that the car has been in regular use, covering around 20k miles over the last
dozen years. The current MOT is valid until April 2024 with just one minor
advisory (rear exhaust mounting defective).
As
you can see in the photos, the interior looks very clean and tidy apart from the
base of the driver’s seat which has tears in the cloth. The bodywork looks very
solid with just a couple of small areas that have been touched in on the
wheelarches. The paint is generally very presentable apart from the boot lid
which has gone flat. The roof would respond well to a good polish.
Driven some 50 miles to the sale, the vendor
reports that the car drives beautifully with everything working as it should. It
has certainly been starting promptly and running well as we have moved it around
on site.
These E30 BMWs are lovely cars to
drive and the styling still turns heads today. Values have been climbing rapidly
of late and this one, which would respond well to some minor tidying, has a lot
going for it.
