Ford
introduced the Anglia 105E as a saloon in 1959 with its distinctive
backward-slanted rear windscreen, an Estate version becoming available in 1961.
Both were powered by a 997cc OHV four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed
manual gearbox. Standard versions had a narrow painted front grille and the
Deluxe versions (as here) had a wider chrome grille. The 105E remained in
production until 1967, becoming Ford’s most successful British car until it was
overshadowed by the all-conquering Cortina.
This Anglia Estate was supplied new by Ford agent Chiswick Garage
of London in June 1965, to a Mr JG Herbert who was to keep it until 1988. It
comes with a very large history file from new, the original service book showing
that it was serviced seven times up to 17,887 miles in October 1972 with many
supporting invoices.
Mr Herbert moved from
London to Somerset in 1969 and the Anglia was maintained by Richardson’s Garage
of Wellington thereafter, with dozens of invoices to show meticulous upkeep
during his 23-year ownership during which time the car covered 41k miles.
The second owner was a Mr P D Belben of
Coalville, Leics, who kept the car for the next 24 years and also looked after
it well. By the time he sold it in 2012 it had covered c.91k miles. The next owner was a Mr Osgood of
Axbridge, Somerset, who kept it for 8 years, getting the bodywork restored by
KMJ Restorations of Exeter in 2013 and fitting new seat covers at the same
time.
In August 2016 he sent it to The Tipton
Garage of Sidmouth where it was fitted with a Ford Kent 1500GT pre-crossflow
engine and gearbox. The engine was fully rebuilt prior to installation with new
pistons, bearings, timing chain etc. and a Piper BP270 camshaft was also fitted
along with a K&N air filter. It also has a modern face-off Sendai
CD/radio.
Our vendor acquired the car in 2020
and has continued to look after it well, fitting a new clutch kit, new head
gasket, servo assisted brakes, and a custom-made stainless steel exhaust.
He also had it rolling-road tuned and a new set of tyres were fitted less
than 50 miles ago. It has only covered around 11,000 miles since the new engine
was fitted, the odometer currently showing 107k miles.
As you can see in
the photos, it looks solid and presentable although the front right wing could
do with some attention. In addition to a huge file of invoices, it comes with an
album of photos showing the body restoration, the original owner’s handbook and
service book plus a couple of workshop manuals.
Starting promptly and running well as we have moved it around on
site, this hotted up Ford Anglia looks like a lot of fun at the sensible guide
price suggested.
