Overflowing
with Italian brio and fabulous fun to drive, the Pininfarina-styled Giulia
Sprint Spider was launched in 1966 with Alfa’s wonderful twin-cam 1,600cc engine
and was destined for greatness from the outset. In 1970 the boat-tail of the
original Duetto was replaced in the Series 2 models by a more chopped off ‘Kamm’
tail to improve high speed stability and luggage capacity.
Three more engines were also added to the options list, the most
powerful being the 132bhp 2-litre unit found in the Spider Veloce. With disc
brakes all round, a five-speed gearbox and limited slip diff as standard, they
were very advanced for their day. The S2 remained in production until 1982 when
it was replaced by the somewhat ‘federalised’ S3 which was only available in
left-hand drive.
Supplied new by Hexagon of
Highgate to a lady in Surrey in August 1976, this Spider Veloce then had four
further owners before being acquired by our vendor’s father way back in 1985
when it had covered 31,500 miles. A former Royal Air Force engineer, he looked
after the car well and drove it at every opportunity, adding another 54,000
miles during his 36-year ownership, always keeping it garaged alongside his
equally beloved Triumph TR3A.
A large file of
invoices attest to meticulous upkeep over the years. Main points of interest
include: bodywork restored by Benalfa of Westbury in 1989; new mohair hood in
2000; engine and gearbox rebuilt by Road and Race Developments of Oxon in 2005
at 68,939 miles; new Boge shocks all round in 2006; new front brake discs and
pads in 2007; steering idler box rebuilt in 2010; reconditioned radiator in
2013; new brake servo and Sachs clutch kit in 2014 at c.83k miles; new front
springs and localised bodywork repairs in 2017. There are many dozens of
invoices for other jobs and new parts fitted but you get the gist – it has been
well-looked-after!
Our vendor inherited the car
from her father in 2021 and reports that it drives nicely with lively
performance and a slick gearchange with no trace of the graunchy 2nd
gear that often afflicts old Alfas. It has certainly been starting promptly and
running well as we have moved it around on site, with good 60psi oil pressure.
Finished in its original shade of Farina White
with a red interior and a black canvas hood, it is in nicely mellowed condition
and comes with no fewer than 25 old MOTs to warrant the 86,570 miles
indicated. A useful quantity of spares are also included. Ready for a new owner
to enjoy, it looks like a lot of fun at the sensible guide price suggested.
