Early chrome dial example that was with its first
owner until 2005 (just 3 since) with 2.8 litre straight-six and manual 'box with
O/D; rear picnic tables; non-runner with scope for cosmetic improvement
Dating from May 1970, this earlier Series 1 XJ6
features the 2.8 litre XK straight-six engine which developed 140bhp and 192NM
of torque when new with DOHC, 12-valves and twin SU carbs driving the rear
wheels via four-speed manual transmission and here, with optional
overdrive.
Stopping power was ahead of the
times with power assisted discs front and rear with independent front suspension
and power steering and is one of some 19,322 2.8 litre SWB versions built
between 1968-1973.
Finished in Ascot
Fawn, the paint is unlikely to win any awards with micro-blistering on all
panels and some colour shade differences in evidence, but the bodywork looks
solid without any real signs of the usual rot found in older Jags. Inside, we find
Oxblood leather which has faded with age/use, which would likely benefit from
some remediation.
The car was bought by our
vendor on a whim earlier this year as a runner, since which time he has not been
able to start it – the engine turns but won't fire. We could smell fuel
when we tried so it seems like fuel is getting to the carbs but that’s where we
left it for risk of damage or fire.
The history
file includes the V5C recording four former keepers, an old V5C, purchase
receipt from when our vendor bought the car from a dealer (showing 38,584 miles
and currently shows 38,585 miles as it has barely been been driven), additional
copy old V5C showing the original owner kept the car for 32 years. There
are also eight old MOTs dating back to 1996 at 32,178 miles and a selection
of bills dating back to the 90s including one dated 2002 when the car was
treated to new timing chain guides, a new clutch and a new oil
pump.
Other bills and MOT check sheets dated
1992 show the mileage at 27,730. A
bill dated March 1996 reveals the car had a holed No.2 piston requiring an
overhaul of the engine including a set of new main bearing shells, six new
pistons and reconditioned cylinder head etc costing £1,756 at 30,222 miles by
Ray Chandler of Station Garage, Fareham.
An
ideal example to get running and then use and improve, these early
chrome dial 2.8 manual cars are lovely things to behold with great ride and
road presence. On offer at No Reserve, the highest bid takes it
away.
