1935 Singer Nine Open Sports

Older ground-up restoration; in regular use; reluctant sale

Charming sports Singer which has been owned by the vendor twice in its lifetime. It was restored from the ground up in the 1970s, with photos on file showing a new body frame freshly delivered and correspondence relating to a collection of Singers offered for sale from a gent in Essex, the supplier of this car.

Invoices on file from this period detail the usual chroming, engine work etc and the car was back on the road in the early '80s. It appears to have had another full engine rebuild in 1986. Our vendor owned it the first time round between 1988 and 1994, covering some 8,000 miles during the period, including trips to Le Mans and Northern Ireland.

It then went on to spend some time in Italy, which inlcuded an appearance in a short film produced by Wes Anderson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b87B7zyucgI called 'Castello Cavalcanti' (car appears around 1m 10sec). You will notice it has red wheels in this film.

During its life in Italy, the car barely covered any mileage, some 1,200 miles being added before the vendor re-aquainted himself with the car in 2021.

Since its arrival back in the UK, the vendor has done a lot of work on the car, including fitting a new camshaft, rocker shaft, rockers and most of the valves. The Distributor Doctor overhauled the distributor and the rear hub splines were replaced. Some parts were rechromed and a new hood bag fitted along with a set of correct and new rear shock absorbers.

Its previous owner had sent the wheels of to be rebuilt (now in silver) and fitted with new tyres, recored the radiator and overhauled the Solex IF30 carburettors. He also rebuilt the dynamo and fitted a modern cut out in the original box. The brake cylinders were also re-sleeved and new shoes fitted.

It comes with loads of history, along with six sidescreens which are described as functional, as is the hood which is a bit tired but keeps out most of the water. The full tonneau is more recent. The file includes a continuation buff logbook and a Singer 9 instruction book.

Pretty as a picture, this appealing Singer Nine Sports looks great value at the suggested guide price.
