1998 BMW M-Roadster (E36/7)
Collectable,
lairy, fast and fun Z M-Roadster packing 316bhp M3 power showing just 85,000
miles with considerable history
Dating from April
1998, this muscular BMW M-Roadster is finished in the best colour in the world
(we think) Estoril Blue metallic with matching blue Mohair hood and sits upon
its model specific staggered fitment 17” five-spoke alloy wheels which really
suit the squat nature of the car.
Under the
sculpted, muscular bonnet, we find the beating heart – the BMW E36 M3 Evo
generation 3.2-litre S50 straight-six engine which develops a whopping 316bhp at
a mind blowing 7,400rpm and 350NM of torque which gave it devastatingly (scary!)
performance with such power in what is basically a Z3 albeit, wider, lower,
stiffer etc, but still a Z3….and without traction control in the earlier models,
such as this.
Inside, we find typical two-tone
blue and black Nappa leather trim with electric seat base adjustment, and
two-tone dash with blue trim. The
spec includes electric soft-top, button for heated rear screen for a hard-top
(not present, not body coloured, but available from vendor in separate
negotiation – please contact us after the sale), electric windows, electric
mirrors, air conditioning, Harman Kardon sound system with BMW Business radio/CD
and heated seats.
The car shows 85,151 miles
and has been in storage for the last four years only coming out for an MOT and
to be offered for sale. The car has
been with our lady owner since July 2015 and proved, we gather a reliable and
fun companion on a European jaunt a few years ago.
As can be seen in the images, there are some spares included,
namely the original head lights as a pair of later improved headlights currently
reside on the front, apparently a common improvement to enhance the night time
illumination.
You may also have noticed in the
images, the car has suffered in the usual Z3/M Roadster places with corrosion
blisters to the lower wing sections and leading ends of the sills – not uncommon
and readily repairable by those in the know (a good
bodyshop).
The history file for the M Roadster
includes the V5C revealing just four previous owners, a tome of invoices for
parts and maintenance along with 16 old MOTs dating back to 2002 at 8,200 miles
and the current ticket valid until May 2023 recording no advisories and
confirming the lack of use over the last 5 years with only c.180 miles covered
in this time. A recent invoice dated May 2022 shows the car has been treated to
a service and inspection and another dated Sept-12 shows purchase of a new blue
Mohair hood at a cost of some £540 and a Dyno print-out showing 307bhp at the
fly in Sept-15 by Motorsport Developments Ltd.
Ready to be used and improved, these 90’s rockets are proper M-cars
with higher revving raw power driving the rear wheels via a proper manual
gearbox. There are none of the nannying driver aids we find
today making them popular and resulting in steadily rising
values and demand. One to buy, sort
out and cherish as the values climb.
