1988 Volvo 740 GL
One-family-owned from new;
only 66,200 miles; lovely old 740 in GL spec with 2.0 petrol power; automatic
transmission; period interior; recently serviced
Supplied new by Lex Brooklands Volvo of Birmingham in March 1988
this tidy old Volvo 740 GL comes to us finished in silver and sits upon its
original 14” polished alloy wheels. Its “designed with a ruler” styling has
developed a cult following of late, with 'form following function' in
proper Scandi fashion.
Under the bonnet, we
find the 2.0-litre B200 series naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine
putting its power down via four-speed automatic transmission. Inside the spacious cabin, we find chic
dark red pinstripe velour interior with super comfortable heated front seats,
original radio/cassette player, heated rear screen, electric aerial, electric
front windows and electric mirrors.
Showing
just 66,206 miles, this 740 boasts uncommonly low mileage with most double or
three times that by now, so usable and reliable were these tanks. The car has, we believe remained in the
same family since new, and has been with the current owner since March 2000,
seeing limited use, clocking up only a few hundred miles a year over the last
few years with less than 3,000 miles covered since 2008.
The car started and ran well as we moved it around for these shots,
but we did note the fitment of an extra ignition toggle switch on the underside
of the dash which needs to be flicked on and off in tandem with the ignition
key.
The history file includes the V5C
revealing just two former keepers, the owner’s packs and service booklet
recording eight stamps, plus one hand written entry, the last in April 1994 with
supporting bill (no mileage recorded) along with some other historic maintenance
bills including for a service in June 2019 at 66,032 miles by Angel Bank Garage
Ltd of Ludlow and an impressive 18 old MOTs plus the current valid until
February 2023 recording 10 advisories (enter the reg at check-mot.service.gov.uk
to view).
Ready to be enjoyed and given some
much needed use, these angular 80’s Swedish icons are becoming rarer and rarer,
particularly in saloon form so get bidding and add it to the stable for it has
low mileage, low owners and quirkiness on its side.
