1926 Austin Seven Gordon England Cup

A superb sports Austin; lots of early features; lovely

It says a lot about the Austin Motor Company, that even though they were flat-out building their hugely successful Sevens, they were still prepared to sell rolling chassis’ to outside coachbuilders.

These included some fairly major concerns such as Swallow, Taylor, Duple and Mulliner as well as smaller producers including Arrow and Boyd Carpenter. Perhaps the most successful though, in terms of output and end result was Gordon England, whose models looked good, were incredibly light thanks to their ply and fabric construction (thanks to Boyd Carpenter's aircraft background) and therefore very competitive on the track and in Reliability Trials. Their Cup model was particularly successful and looked very pretty with its bumblebee tail.

This 1926 example has been in the vendor's hands for the last 24 years. A Gent with a serious Austin Seven addiction, he has taken it to many shows over the years, the car winning the 'Gordon England' prize on several occassions at the big Beaulieu Austin Seven bash.

The car has many correct features, including the badge on the bodywork, the charming fishtale exhaust and a hood, the frame of which will need a minor fettle here and there to make it a practical proposition. It is entirely standard and unmodified as far as we can see and is ready to be enjoyed straight away.

It has wanted for nothing since he acquired it and is ready to enjoy the 100th Anniversary of the Austin 7 this year. Stephen Bayley wrote in the Daily Mail about the Seven's 100th Birthday, summarising the car perfectly - "100 years after it brought motoring to the masses, the Austin 7 is the most joyous car I've ever driven". Perfectly put.....
