1993 Ford Thunderbird LX (MkX)
Unusual to see
MkX Thunderbird showing just 59,398 miles requiring some light
recommissioning; room for 4 and a large boot with a 3.8 American Essex V6
and auto 'box
Dating from November 1992, this is
an exceptionally rare car to see on UK shores, with the vast majority of
Thunderbirds in the UK being much older models or the last of the line
11th Generation built between 2002-2005.
This sleek coupe hails from the 10th Generation and was
produced between 1989-1997 with a face-lift in 1994. The engine options included
a naturally aspirated 3.8 litre American Essex V6, supercharged 3.8 Essex V6 and
a V8 option in either 4.6 or 4.9 guise mated to either 4-speed automatic or a
5-speed manual for the supercharged car.
This
example has remained off the road in storage for the past few years following
the expiry of its last (1 advisory for ‘underside covered in underseal’) MOT in
November 2016 but does however run and drive. The car shows just 59,398 miles, with
only c.4,000 miles covered since MOT in July 2007 at 55,765 miles which is very
little indeed over 15 years.
The car presents
well enough, but there are signs of cosmetic deterioration to some areas as
pictured on the sills, sill ends, door bottoms and other localised areas of
paint degradation that will likely require attention ahead of road use. An LX
spec model, the interior presents well with automatic electronic seat belt
guides, electronic climate control with A/C, electric seats, heated rear screen,
electric windows, mirrors, glass sunroof, cruise control, original Ford
radio/cassette, electric aerial and comfortable blue velour interior with
seating for 4.
Under the bonnet, we find the
naturally aspirated 140bhp 3.8-litre Essex V6 engine mated to 4-speed Ford AOD
automatic transmission driving the rear wheels giving a 0-60mph time of c.11
seconds – not a speed demon perhaps but more of a comfortable tourer coupe that
gave better economy and range with its 18 gallon tank than its
rivals.
The history file includes just the V5C
showing the car to have been registered in the UK in February 1993 the same year
as the declared manufacture year on the V5C (although the data tag in the
driver's door shows it was actually built in November
1992) recording eight former keepers to the current and a VOSA MOT
history print-out. An unusual and
practical 4-seat coupe that deserves a chance to shine once
again.
