1980 Pilgrim Family Tourer
No
Reserve
Put together in 1992; one of 250 four seaters
thought to have been built; donor car was 1980 Ford Cortina; galvanised
chassis; offered here from a deceased estate
There are not many kit cars suitable for four adults but
Pilgrim marketed these FTs as just that, alongside its smaller siblings, the
Bulldog and Sumo.
Notes on file suggest that the original builder of the
car, near Portsmouth, was a retired Artificer in the Royal Navy, so we can
assume that he knew what he was doing on the engineering/mechanical front. It is
believed that the original donor car was a 1980 1,593cc 80,000 mile standard
Ford Cortina. Bought in 1991, it was built up using the galvanised chassis
option, purchasing many original instruments and trim direct from Pilgrim and of
course the fibreglass wings, bonnet and boot. We understand it was completed in
around 1992 and used only sparingly, adding approximately 6,500 miles, having
had oil/filter change and cooling system flushed and refilled at 5000
miles.
At some point c.1995, it was sold locally and again seldom used,
although was looked after having all the brakes renewed and adjusted and after
only a short fun time, the car was sold on to our vendor's family in around
1998. One of the first jobs to do was strip the engine, clean the head, fit new
valves and generally tidy it up. Soon after, new headlights were fitted and some
repairs made to the fuel tank. It has been with them ever since and
unfortunately only being offered for sale following the owner passing away last
year. From the same stable as the Bentley Mk VI in the auction, the family are
no strangers to the classic car scene. In November it was reported on having
some poor running issues but after new leads, plugs, battery and alternator, it
was running again, sailing through an MOT (expires November this year) and was
driven over 50 miles to our site in January.
Now showing 13,600 miles, it
has obviously been used and looks like it has been kept on the road most of the
time, but only covering a few hundred miles each year. Possibly a potential
vehicle for a staycation this Summer with all (or some) of the
family?
Included with the car is a complete original construction manual,
a potted history from the previous owner and some maintenance
invoices.
