Rare 1938 Whisky sells for over £10,000 at Brightwells
A pre-Second World War bottle of Macallan Whisky sold for £10,500 at Brightwells’ recent auction of Rare Malt Whisky and Fine Cognac. The sale attracted worldwide interest, particularly from the Far-East; UK bidders from around the country were joined by online bidders from the US, Hong Kong, Japan and Scandinavia.
The auction took place on 17th October at the Leominster Saleroom and featured over 400 lots. As well as a superb selection of Scotch Whisky dating back to the 1880s there were a number of rare Japanese Whiskies on offer and limited-edition bottlings of brandy from the regions of Cognac and Armagnac.
Investment in Malt Whisky has never been more popular and it was no surprise to see the top prices paid on the day for Whiskies from the Macallan distillery. As well as the 1938 (£10,500), a 1950 bottling achieved £6,000 and a rare 1981 Royal Marriage edition made £3,900. The Dalmore distillery is also becoming increasingly sought after; over 20 Dalmores from one private collection were offered with a rare 40 year old bottling being the star of the show: achieving £4,600.
Nearly the world’s most expensive marmalade!
A vendor from Worcester had a shock when he rang Brightwells for a valuation. He had intended to pour a glug of Macallan 1975 into the marmalade he was making, luckily he didn’t because the bottle went on to sell for £1800!
Brightwells’ Wine, Port and Champagne Sale was held two weeks earlier on 3rd October. Over 500 lots were offered including 2 major private collections from London and Geneva.
Over 300 lots of classic Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone Wines came under the hammer. The top price for single bottle on the day was £2,000 for an Imperial (6lt) of Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1990.
An excellent Port and Champagne section featured an ultra-rare Constantino’s 1896 (£490) and a Veuve Clicquot Grande Dame 1962 (£480).
Brightwells will be holding their pre-Christmas sale on Wednesday 5th December.
