Haut Brion, Margaux and Petrus all perform well as investors do battle
A 12 bottle case of Chateau Haut Brion 1989 sold well above market expectations at Brightwells’ recent sale of Wine, Port, Champagne and Whisky. The hammer finally fell at £24,260 after spirited bidding from the UK, continental Europe and Hong Kong.
Other highlights from the Bordeaux section included a 12 bottle case of Chateau Margaux 1990 (£11,374) and a single magnum of Petrus which sold at £3,206
The auction was comprised of over 1200 lots, with classic French wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone and Champagne forming the lion’s share of the catalogue. There were also excellent collections of Vintage Port, rare Malt Whisky and fine Cognac.
6 bottles of Dom Perignon 1990 sold for £1,573, 6 bottles of Taylor ‘s 1927 Port achieved £2,057 while the top whisky on the day was a Highland Park 25 year old (£1,163)
Brightwells’ Head of Wine Sales Paddy Shave was very pleased with the results. ‘With inflation riding high there has been an increase in buyers looking to invest; it was great to achieve some excellent results for our vendors’.
A clearance rate of over 90% took the sale total to over £360,000 with buyers registering to bid from all over the world.
Brightwells will hold their next auction of Wine, Port, Champagne and Whisky on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th September.
