Records broken again as Brightwells’ Wine Auction garners worldwide interest.
Three major private wine collections contributed over 1000 lots to Brightwells latest wine sale which took place on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August. Prices achieved exceeded vendor’s expectations with many lots achieving values well above the estimate.
The range on offer ensured a busy saleroom with many bidders joining in by telephone and through the internet. Several buyers admitted they were relaxing by the sea while placing their bids!
The sale opened with 400 lots of red Bordeaux, all impeccably stored and in excellent condition. Bidding was brisk with much on offer for the wine drinker as well as the wine investor. The top priced Bordeaux lot on the day was a 12 bottle case of Chateau Latour 1995 (£3,900 in bond), closely followed by a case of Chateau Haut Brion from the same vintage (£3,300).
Two spectacular Burgundy sections saw the keenest bidding over the 2 days. The battle raged across the oceans with UK, US, Hong Kong and Scandinavian bidders all out in force. Armand Rousseau’s star continues to rise, 5 bottles of his Chambertin 2004 achieved £4,100 and a magnum of Clos St Jacques 2002 sold at £1,250.
A unique collection of Vintage Port with vintages going back as far as 1908 inspired London collectors and dealers to make the journey West. With Taylor’s 1935. 1955 and 1960 on offer at the pre-sale tasting the general feeling was that it had been worth the trip! Highlights from the section included a case of Taylor’s 1945 (£7,000) and 10 bottles of Taylor’s 1935 (£4,100).
In all the sale totalled over £360,000 with a clearance rate of 93%.
