Description
In the current ownership for 46 years; tuned Rover 4.6 V8 with Stage
II heads; 5-speed gearbox; disc brakes all round; independent rear suspension;
xenon lights; driven 80 miles to the sale; more grunt than a pig
farm...
If you've ever fancied yourself in an MGB but find the standard
1.8 lump rather uninspiring, why not get yourself into the seat of this monster?
Under the bonnet lurks a tuned 4.6 Rover V8 which is guaranteed to set your
pulse racing.
Our vendor describes it simply as: ‘Quite quick’.
And he should know, because he's owned it for the last 46
years.
First registered in Birmingham
in November 1974, GOC 171N came into the vendor's hands way back in
1979 when it was still fitted with the standard 3.5 V8. Only the fourth owner,
he has lavished oodles of love and money on the car
since.
Records on file start in 2004,
when our vendor chose to swap the 3.5 lump for the current 4.6 and give it some
extra beans. The standard cylinder heads were replaced with Stage III
fully polished and ported heads, the camshafts were also upgraded and
the manifold replaced with an Edlebrock Performer II unit. This was done by
V8 Developments Ltd in Lincolnshire at a cost of at least
£2,500.
Between then and 2011, at
least another £7,500 was spent on the car, which included running repairs, work
to the fuel system, axle rebuild and localised body
repairs.
Over the next four or five
years, many other performance modifications were made too, including the
fitment of RV8 front suspension and brakes; independent rear suspension and
brakes; an R380 five-speed gearbox; new injection system; xenon headlights; 15"
alloy wheels; new tyres and a Trackstar 57 security system, which has
been renewed this year.
Aside from regular
maintenance, other work in recent years includes taking the bonnet
back to bare metal for a repaint, the front wings being blended in too. The
exhaust system, brakes, radiator, water pump and alternator belt were all
renewed in 2021, along with a major service. The rear bumper was also
replaced and both batteries were renewed
only last year.
Soon to be MOT-exempt, it has been
regularly put through an MOT, the last test being passed in August 2024
with just one minor advisory (slight play in the steering) since when it
has only covered some 760 miles. Driven 80 miles to the auction, it has been
starting promtly and running well as we have moved it around on site with
healthy oil pressure and a wonderfully woofly exhaust
note.
A proper Q car which
looks as unassuming as the way our vendor sounds, it packs a serious
punch - when the mood takes you, it has the capacity to startle other road
users as they see it flying by.
As you might expect, it will be a
huge wrench for our vendor to part with this beast which has been a much-loved
family member for over four decades. Bid generously now and it could be you
who drives it home...
