Description
Restored in the early 1990s with some choice upgrades; only 17k
miles on rebuilt fast road engine; recent new clutch and full repaint; a super
example of this rare model
First
registered in March 1976, this TVR 1600M is a rare model as only 148 were built
and it is thought that fewer than half survive today.
A good file of invoices extending back to the mid-1980s show that
the car has been well looked after. The engine was fully rebuilt by Fourtrack
Engineering of Llanrwst in 1987 at 78,599 miles and it has only covered 16,900
miles since. The rebuild incorporated some choice upgrades including bored out
to 1660cc; Vandervell high strength bearings; reground crank; Piper HR270
camshaft, cam followers and valve springs; gas-flowed head to Escort Mexico
spec. The cylinder head was subsequently converted to run on unleaded fuel in
1999.
Other work in the late 1980s/early 1990s
included: exchange Ford Escort GT close-ratio gearbox; new brakes and Spax
adjustable suspension; electronic ignition; new Weber 32/36 DGV carb; propshaft
rebuilt; steering rack overhauled; seats retrimmed; new
headlights.
In late 1991/early 1992 the car was
sent to Classic TVR of Cheshire who removed the body and restored the chassis.
They also fitted many new parts and completely repainted the car, the mileage at
this point being 82,117.
Our vendor acquired
the car in 2022 at which point it had been off the road for 10 years. A retired
engineer with a fondness for Fast Fords, he has enjoyed bringing the TVR back to
life with the following work carried out: radiator rebuilt; new water pump; new
alternator; new clutch; new battery; new brake master cylinder and pipes;
chassis cleaned, painted and waxoil protected; TVR T-slot alloys refurbed;
bodywork completely resprayed to a high standard.
As you can see in the photos, this rare TVR 1600M now looks most
attractive and has been starting promptly and running well as we have moved it
around on site with good 40psi oil pressure.
