1958 Triumph TR3

Description

From a deceased estate; original UK market car; lived in dry state Texas from 1978 - 1990; total body-off restoration in 1993; front disc brakes; overdrive; runs and drives but in need of minor fettling

As the Heritage Certificate confirms, this TR3 is a relatively rare RHD UK market example – of the 13,377 made, only 1,286 were originally sold here, virtually all the others going to the booming USA market although many more have come back here since and been converted to RHD.

Built in September 1957, it was originally finished in Beige with a Stone leather interior and a Fawn hood. A copy of the original buff logbook shows that it was sold new via Dudley Cobbold Autos of Wimbledon to a gentleman in Epsom (his name is hard to read).

In 1978 it was exported to America and it stayed in Wichita Falls, Texas, until being brought back to the UK in November 1990. By this time it had been repainted red but was still RHD, as shown in photos on file.

In 1993 it was treated to a total body-off restoration and although there are no invoices to show exactly what was done, an album of photos show that it was a very thorough job, while a hand-written note details a multitude of new parts fitted. These include: all new brakes with discs at the front; new shocks and springs; diff and propshaft rebuilt; re-cored radiator; all new exhaust including manifold; overdrive rebuilt; new alternator, fuel pump, half-shafts etc.

It has had four owners since, according to the V5C, our vendor acquiring the car in 2021. On offer here from a deceased estate, we are told that it runs and drives although the brakes will need attention and the speedo and rev counter will need to be re-fitted. The rear number plate/spare wheel compartment lid is present but not fitted in the photos. 

A nice winter project for someone, with lots of expensive restoration work already done, it shouldn’t take too much to get it back on the road for the Spring.
