Description
Modified for track use in 1993; rebuilt and prepared for Historic
Rally events in 2015/18; Guy Croft Racing engine; rally prep by Darren
Cooksey of MSMR; MSA papers valid until 2028; only 4k miles from build; ready
for road, track or rally use
Dating from March 1978, this
Lancia Beta Montecarlo was first modified for track use in the early 1990s when
it was owned by a Mr Bray of Brighton. This included a full engine rebuild to
Stage 2 Fast Road spec with twin Dellorto 45 carbs and suitable for unleaded
fuel by Lancia guru Guy Croft, the build sheets showing that it produced 171bhp
@ 7,200 rpm (compared to 120bhp as standard).
Sadly Mr Bray
passed away before getting to enjoy the car. In early 2012 it was offered for
sale by Lancia specialist Richard Thorne of Reading, his ad stating that the car
had not been used since it was built. The next owner acquired it in April 2012.
Between 2015 and 2018 he had the car completely rebuilt for use as a Historic
Rally car.
The exact spec is far too
detailed to list in full here but is amply detailed in a vast number of invoices
and photos on file. The car was stripped to a bare shell and the body/chassis
was dipped, sand-blasted, de-rusted and etch-primed by Enviro-Strip of Tamworth.
It was then then sent to Spraytech of Cirencester where it was
strengthened/reinforced and fitted with fireproof bulkheads and a 10-point
welded-in roll cage before being repainted in Tornado Red, the bills for this
alone coming to over £22,000.
Guy Croft Racing got involved
again by making a bespoke stainless steel exhaust system. Other features
include: suspension custom-made by Leda with adjustable oil-filled rally dampers
and D Faulkner coil springs (200lbs/inch front; 300lbs/inch rear); rose-jointed
wishbones and zinc plated suspension arms by Capri Racing; Tarox Series 2 brake
discs and pads with Tilton adjustable brake balance; hydraulic handbrake;
custom-made alloy skid plates and sump guard; polycarbonate windows; 45-litre
alloy fuel tank etc.
Much of the final prep to
bring the car up to MSA standard was done by Montecarlo guru Darren Cooksey of
MSMR (Montecarlo Servicing, Modification and Repair). This included fitting a
new wiring loom and replica Lancia 037 Group B dashboard and instruments
supplied by Mick Colvill Rally Legends; isolator switches; LED lights in the
cabin, engine bay and front boot; uprated windscreen demisters; Cibie front
spotlights and Marchal rear spotlight; steering rack rebuilt; FIA homologated
Sparco Evo II seats and 6-point race harnesses; plumbed-in fire extinguisher
system and handheld Foam Lifeline; intercom system with headsets and control
panel; Monit G200 tripmeter and GPS.
The car got its MSA papers in
2018 (Stage Rally Category 1) but as far as we know, it was never actually used
in anger, although it seems that it went to Le Mans and back in 2022. Our vendor
acquired the car in February 2023 and has enjoyed using it as a fast road car,
the odometer showing that it has still only covered 3,965 miles from build. He
has had the MSA papers renewed so they are valid until 2028.
Classed as a Historic Vehicle on the V5C so it is free to tax and
MOT-exempt, this expertly modified Montecarlo is on offer here at a fraction of
the build cost and is ready for a new owner to enjoy, on road, track or rally
stage.
