Description
Sympathetically restored numbers-matching A-Suffix with overdrive;
over £46,000 spent; a nice example with a very
good interior
First registered to a Mr Grundy from
Kingstanding, Birmingham on 26th October 1972, this A-Suffix Range Rover Classic
retains its original engine and has had a fortune spent on its
restoration.
Sold by Colliers of Birmingham, the Passport to Service
shows their PDi and two further stamps by them, plus another in 1975 at 17,662
miles through a dealer in Tamworth.
A copy V5 on file shows it was owned
by another Mr Grundy between 1994 and 2005, then residing in Surrey between 2009
and 2019 which is when the real spending took place.
There are plenty of
bills on file, the majority from C&C Autos of Ripley who undertook a
thorough restoration which included replacing the inner and outer
wings and significant chassis repairs including suspension towers, springs,
paintwork, petrol tank, rebuilt doors - with photos on a memory stick to show
the extent of the work done.
Classic and Modern Engine Services rebuilt
the engine, with work listed as a full engine balance, Piper BP255 camshaft,
Purflex timing chain kit, vernier pulley, ported and polished heads, new valves
and matching to the exhaust ports. This cost over £4,500.
The brakes and
suspension were also rebuilt along with the clutch, gearbox and overdrive and a
Mallory coil and distributor fitted. For a while, it ran an Edelbrock manifold
and carb, but this has been removed in favour of a pair of new SU carbs
(£1,817). In addition new track rod ends, speedo, front swivels, and modified
oil pump are all listed....along with a rebuild of the seats in their original
style costing £2,436.
The total at the bottom of the page is some
£46,028, proving the point that one should always buy a car after the heavy
lifting has been accomplished. The MOT history shows regular light use (7,000
miles over the last 10 years) and its most recent MOT was issued in March
2022 since when it has only covered about 300 miles.
Painted in the
correct launch colours of Masai Red with Sahara Dust wheels, it ticks many
boxes for an early A-Suffix Range Rover retaining its original engine and fitted
with manual overdrive - a nice addition as the original was a bit undergeared
for today's road conditions.
