Running and driving nicely
on site; MR2 seats; recent brake overhaul; ideal winter rally
car
The Saab 96 V4 was launched in
1960 with a longitudinally mounted 841cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine. These
engines were simple and reliable, but they did produce more emissions
than a four-stroke engine. Saab faced increasing pressure to replace the
two-stroke engines as the cars progressed, and a more modern and environmentally
friendly alternative made its way into the 96 in 1967 with the addition of a
1498cc V4 engine, which produced 65bhp.
Like its predecessors, the
Saab 96 was front-wheel drive, making it very suitable in the harsh Scandinavian
winters. This also helped in its successful rallying career throughout the '60s
and '70s, achieving numerous victories worldwide and gaining an excellent
reputation for durability and performance.
The 96 also came with
excellent safety features, including a sturdy body structure and advanced
seatbelts. With a well-engineered chassis and mechanics, it was the unique
styling which made the 96 so popular amongst the hearts of the Saab
enthusiasts.
First registered in April
1972, this Saab 96 V4 has been starting promptly and driving
nicely on site. Fitted with some MK3 MR2 front seats, renovated
during last year with all new braking system, replacement engine and lots
of fabrication and welding, some invoices for this can be found in the history
folder.
