Description
Tight and potent feeling Elan S4 with a sweet engine; scope for cosmetic improvement; original chassis; 1st owner from 1969-2022! lots of useful recent works carried out
Dating from 1969 this cool little lightweight Elan S4 is finished in French Blue with black vinyl interior and sits on its correct steel wheels. Its understood the car is a matching numbers example which has not been restored cosmetically and retains its original chassis, but has been very well maintained mechanically by its original owner who had the pleasure of owning the car from 1969-2022.
Under the bonnet, we find the 1,558cc four cylinder twincam four-cylinder engine which was good for approximately 100bhp which is a lot in a car weighing just 700kg.
The car comes to us requiring some cosmetic remediation, although runs and drives, and as such is perfectly usable as is, just as our vendor has done.
The car came to our vendor after he had done some work to it for the 2nd owner, a chum who unfortunately became to unwell to continue, so our vendor took the car on. He has replaced the driver’s door window cables/clamps, cleaned the fuel tank and lines, stripped and ultrasonically cleaned, and rebuilt the carbs with new needles, jets, diaphragms and gaskets.
He has also removed the cylinder head, checked the valve guides had the inlet ports gas flowed, valves ground and clearances re-set. The head bolts were replaced with ARP studs along with new head and cam cover gaskets. Some coolant pipes were also replaced, a new starter solenoid, new dynamo regulator and electronic ignition was also fitted. As a result, the car starts on the button and runs very well. We are told a new Spyder electric headlight conversion kit is supplied but not fitted which cost some £357 and that the car has a hidden ignition immobiliser in the glovebox for security.
The history file includes the V5C showing just two former keepers, a ton of receipts for parts and works undertaken. Also a detailed note from its time with the first owner, relating to the car and its maintenance history along with an old V5 and buff/green log book.
One to continue to enjoy, improve the paint perhaps, or leave as it – one thing is for sure, the drive will put a smile on your face…as long as your not much taller than 6ft!
