One of three
Healey 3000s in this sale and undoubtedly the best, this stunning MkIII BJ8 has
recently been treated to a total nut-and-bolt restoration which has resulted in
the fine specimen you see today.
The Heritage
Certificate shows that it was built in October 1964 finished in Ivory White with
a red interior and a black hood with optional wire wheels, heater, adjustable
steering column and overdrive. A LHD export model, it was despatched to America
in November 1964.
It was imported
back to the UK from Nashville in August 1990 with all duties paid. It then sat
unregistered and in storage while the chap who had imported the car converted it
to RHD and began to restore it, as documented in invoices on
file.
Our vendor
acquired the Healey as an unfinished project in 2014. Over the next four years
he completely stripped and rebuilt the car from the ground up, the total cost
coming to over £48,000. A former aerospace engineer who specialised
in jet engines and worked on the fuel control systems for
the Tornado, the Eurofighter and the Boeing 757, he did much of the work
himself, enlisting professional help as required. The full extent of the work
carried out is far too detailed to list in full here, but is amply documented in
copious invoices, spreadsheets and photos on file.
Rest assured it
was a very thorough job and virtually every part of this car has been renewed or
refurbished, including a rebuilt engine and a rebuilt overdrive gearbox. Other
features include 1-2-3 electronic ignition; conversion to negative earth;
spin-on oil filter; uprated water pump; uprated front springs; new steering
column; updated electrics; 4-blade cooling fan and recent waxoil
treatment.
Finally finished
in March 2018, the car flew through an MOT with no advisories recorded and
gained a V5C with the registration number EBY 769B and Historic Vehicle status
so it is free to tax and MOT-exempt.
Since the
restoration was completed, the car has only covered some 1,400 miles and we are
told that it drives as well as it looks with working overdrive. Driven some 70
miles to the sale, it has been starting promptly and running like a Swiss watch
as we have moved it around on site with good 60psi oil pressure. In fact it is
fair to say that this is one of the quietest and smoothest Healey engines that
we have ever experienced, with an equally slick gearchange. These aerospace
chaps clearly know what they are doing!
As you can see in
the photos it looks virtually good as new, both above and below, and you would
be hard pressed to find a smarter example at the sensible guide price
suggested.
