Description
A fine 3.8 manual with overdrive; in the current family ownership for
36 years; former multiple show-winner; original leather interior; lovely wood;
power steering; over £10k spent on recent recommissioning
This former multiple show-winner has
been in the same family ownership since 1988 with just two owners prior to
that.
The
indicated mileage of 65,162 is believed correct and is supported by a batch
of 20 old MOT certificates dating from 1972 onwards when it had covered 48,000
miles.
At
the time of purchase in 1988 the odometer was showing 61,000 miles, so
it has only seen occasional use, being maintained by the same local garage
throughout the current 36-year ownership.
It
has been in storage for the last few years due to age and subsequent passing
and was entrusted to the same garage in 2022 for a full recommissioning at
a cost approaching £9,000!
This
work involved the removal of the engine and gearbox to facilitate a full
overhaul of the cylinder head and valves - including skimming. A new clutch was
fitted at the same time together with a full brake overhaul with new
calipers, pipes, discs and pads. They fitted electronic ignition and overhauled
the carburettors too and it was subsequently road tested and taken for MOT which
it passed in August last year with no advisories.
Since
then, a new stainless steel exhaust system and new period correct number plates
have been added, bringing the overall spend to more than
£10,000.
The
original interior is completely unspoilt and a wonderful place to be - the seats
being free from damage and the leather nice and supple. There is no staining to
the headlining and the wood trim has been professionally repolished. The door
rubbers have been changed and period correct seat belts fitted front and
rear.
The
paintwork is in good overall condition with a lovely shine, although there are a
few small areas which would benefit from attention in due course (shown in the
photos) but little that detracts from the overall impression of a highly
original, carefully stored and maintained example.
The
history file includes the aforementioned invoice for recommissioning, bill of
sale from 1988, a sheaf of MOTs from 1972 onwards, handbooks and workshop manual
and it comes with the original tool kit mounted in the spare
wheel.
Looking
fabulous in Opalescent Golden Sand with tan leather interior, it sits on good
chrome wire wheels and looks very sharp.
It
further benefits from factory fitted power steering -a rare, desirable and some
would say vital fitment. At some
time in the past, the Borg Warner auto gearbox has been replaced by the Jaguar
all-syncromesh four-speed unit with overdrive as fitted from '65 onwards and is
a highly desirable upgrade.
The
engine is reported to be performing extremely well since the overhaul and the
gearbox and overdrive have been working as they should since arrival on
site.
A
rare opportunity to purchase a genuine, top-quality low mileage 3.8 Mk2 from
long-term ownership.
