Description
Rescued in the 1960s; raced regularly in its current NE
TT lookalike guise in the late 2000s and later; MMM registered;
current and past MSA and VSCC logbooks; spares package
A car that
has certainly led a full life, this MG was discovered by a 19-year-old
John Adcock in 1964 languishing in a compost heap. At this time, CGJ 295 sported
a rakish NB forward-hinge two-seater body and was in a sad state but was
complete with a six-cylinder engine and was soon sold on for a handsome
profit......
A list of subsequent owners is on file, changing hands
through the '80s and '90s. Its previous owner acquired it in 1996 and was to
keep it until 2017.
The chassis number stamped on the dumb-iron NA 0517
is that of the second of the factory NEs, although this NB is recognised by
the MMM Register as chassis NA 0778 which carried the registration number CGJ
295 in the distant past. The current V5C reflects chassis number NA 0517.
The current configuration has a wheelbase of around 8 ft so is nice
and pointy, the car having been built into an NE TT spec lookalike - a replica
of the Charlie Dodson TT NE, purportedly during the mid to late 1960s. It was
sold to our vendor with a Historic Technical Passport from the MSA which was
transfered to the current owner in 2017.
The previous owner raced it in
Historic events across Europe, including the Old Timer GP at the Nurburgring and
Klausen in the early 2000s.
The car was purchased by the vendor as a
going proposition, although the vendor was intending to race it properly so
stripped and checked everything.
He had quite a list of jobs to sort,
which started with a full engine overhaul. This included new white metal
bearings in a replacement block, a rebore to 1,287cc, new pistons, careful
balancing and a new Newman cam. Serdi machined the block and also gas-flowed the
head and fitted new valves.
Guest Gears made a new gear-set for the
four-speed Wolseley gearbox, the 12" brakes were refurbished and Burlen rebuilt
the carburettors.
In addition, new diff bearings were fitted, water pump
overhauled, wheels overhauled, sprayed and balanced and numerous small jobs
attended to.
There are photos of the engine work on file and an article
from the MG Enthusiast magazine in October 2021 with the car on the front
cover.
The attention to detail is impressive and this reliable
combination of an un-blown, tuned Magnette engine has a lot going for
it.
Time to go racing, either here or
abroad.
