Description
Lovely UK supplied car from new; first owner to 1958, second to 2013;
restored in 2014 and ready to rumble
Only the second
model produced by Citroen, the Type-B replaced the Type-A in June 1921. Rated at
10hp, it was light and reasonably brisk with a three-speed gearbox and a top
speed of 45mph.
Like the Type-A (a half-track version of which became
the first car ever to cross the Sahara in 1922), the Type-B was famed for being
virtually indestructible and proved a big success on the export market,
Citroen’s pioneering use of mass-production techniques meaning that they could
churn them out at a rate of 200 per day, some 89,800 being sold before it was
largely replaced by the Type-C in 1925.
The dash plaque would
suggest that this delightful Torpedo-bodied B2 was supplied by S&A Fuller in
Bath and it was registered on 9th December 1922 to Mr J Monteath of
Bradford-On-Avon. Copies of the County records on file indicate that
it was originally painted Slate Blue.
Mr Monteath kept it until 1957,
selling it to James Dalton of St Pauls in Bristol who soon passed it on to Mr
Chedgy of Bristol in September 1958, by now painted green.
It was
unearthed in an unrestored but entirely original state in 2013 and given the
full works. Photos on file show just how original it was, down to the lovely
Auster rear passenger screen, supplier's plate, 1957 tax disc and complete
upholstery and hood.
The restoration was completed by 2014 and the car
was given a VSCC Buff Form in 2022 when it came into the hands of our vendor. A
VSCC Light Car stalwart, he has used it for several events, but the arrival of
an exciting new distraction means this charming B2 is now up for
grabs.
He has had a kingpin bush sorted out and a new petrol tank
made and fitted. Further work has included a decoke, new head gasket and fitting
a decent magneto.
It comes with a couple of interesting books on the
model and has been running and driving beautifully since arrival on site. In
sparkling order, this is as pretty as they come.
