Description
Reutter-built Cabriolet;
great history; just three owners from new; original engine included; a very
worthwhile project
One of just 429 Reutter-built Cabriolets for the
1956 Model Year, this ‘proper’ barn-find 356A has lived in Denmark for almost
all of its life.
Sold new through Skandinavisk
Motor Company, it left the factory in November 1956 to be first registered on
31st March 1957.
The Porsche Certificate of
Authenticity that comes with the car shows a warranty claim for a new gearbox in
February 1958, confirming that the 1.6 engine which accompanies the car (on a
pallet) is the correct and original unit for the car which was fitted from new.
The engine currently installed is a standard VW unit.
It changed hands for the
first time on 11 June 1959, purchased by Esben Ubbesen and presented to his wife
as a gift. It was to remain in the family for the next 62 years, although was
taken off the road and put into storage in the early ‘70s.
Mr Ubbesen gave the car an
occasional covering of oil for protection, hence it’s reasonable state of
preservation. It finally saw the light of day again in 2021, coming into our
vendor’s hands in late 2022 – it’s third owner….
He was intending to have the
car fully restored, but has had a change of plans and is now reducing his fleet
so the opportunity to acquire an original and unmolested 356A 1600 Cabriolet is
now yours.
Appearing largely complete,
and with its matching engine, this exciting project looks most tempting. Some of
the very best expertise in early Porsche restoration exists in the UK, as well
as strong parts backup from the factory and beyond, making this a relatively
straightforward proposition with great potential at the sensible guide
price suggested.
