Lot Ended
Description
From a deceased estate; body off resto in the '90s; smart interior;
brake servo; for recommissioning after a period in storage
The MG
Y-Type saloon was another successful design from Gerald Palmer, the genius
behind the Jowett Javelin, multiple MGs and latterly Vauxhall's
range of the 1960s.
Using a Morris Eight four-door shell as its
base, Palmer neatly grafted an MG front and swept styling to the rear, along
with a lovely walnut-clad dash and appealing interior. The nice steering,
perky 1,250cc engine and modest size made for a most attractive sports
saloon in the pre-war idiom. Some 8,600 were made all told.
This car
dates from early 1951 and was delivered within the first year to
Dublin, hence the ZL registration number. In those days, these plates
were accepted by the licencing authorites on this side of the water, the
car heading back home in 1956.
The continuation logbook dates from 1963
and interestingly has been doctored to show the car was first registered in
1946 - some time before production started and presumably as some wheeze to
reduce tax?
It details a number of owners, the car coming into the hands
of the current family in 1992. It was off the road in the early 1990s for a
body-off restoration and then used by members of the family for fun
and to take to local shows etc.
It is now in need of a modicum of
recommissioning, having been off the road for the last year or two. There has
been some deterioration to the paintwork, but otherwise looks solid and
has a smart interior. We have not been able to start it due to a starter
switch problem, but the engine has been turning over.
It has been
upgraded with a brake servo and when back up and running, will be the ideal use
and improve everyday driver.
Their sweet running, great steering, strong
brakes (in this case) and lovely interior makes these cars very easy to own and
drive.
