This
fine-looking Morgan Plus 8 3.9 V8 was supplied new by Libra Motors of London in
April 1999. The Morgan Chassis Record shows that it was finished in Mercedes
Grey with the following options: wire wheels; clock; walnut dash; exterior tread
rubbers; aerial mounting; Autolux blue leather upholstery piped in grey; navy
blue rubber backed carpets; leather centre panel; sports seats; map reading
light and door handles – yes, they really were extras!
Sadly there is no early history with the car but an HPI report
shows that it was recorded as a Cat D insurance loss (damaged; repairable) in
July 2013, at which point the MOT history online records the mileage as
c.37,200. It seems that the car was then repaired before being put back on the
road in 2019, and although there are no details of the damage, it was clearly
repaired to a very high standard.
The history
picks up again in August 2019 when the car was sold by Techniques of Herts to a
gentleman in Gainsborough for £27,950, the Cat D being declared at the time of
sale. Before buying the car, he had it inspected by an independent engineer
which it passed satisfactorily (report on file). Before delivery Techniques also
treated the car to a full service which cost £2,303 and included four new
Pirelli tyres, new front brake discs and pads and chassis Waxoyl treatment. The
mileage at this point was 37,849.
In May 2020
it went to Brands Hatch Morgans of Kent where the front suspension was
completely rebuilt with new chrome kingpins, new bushes, new wheel bearings, hub
seals etc. The engine was also tuned and new front spot lamps fitted plus
various other minor jobs, the bill for this lot coming to £2,443. In July 2020
at 39,035 miles it had another small service and an MOT at The Vehicle Centre
Thanet.
Already fitted with a Simmonds
Easy-Fit mohair hood, in June 2021 it went back to Simmonds (Superspoke Ltd.
Malvern) for a new 3-zip tonneau in blue mohair and a new blue leather hood
envelope at a cost of £1,273.
In June 2021 it
went to back to Brands Hatch Morgans where a new fuel tank and fuel pump were
fitted at a cost of £1,477. In October 2021 at 40,150 miles Brands Hatch Morgans
gave it another full service which included greasing all the chassis points and
Waxoyl treatment at a cost of £1,010. New chrome headlamp rims were also fitted
at around the same time. In July 2023 it got a new pair of inner steering joints
to address an MOT failure point, the current MOT being valid until August 2024
with no advisories recorded.
According to
correspondence on file, the car has been fitted with a performance chip at some
point (possibly by RPI Engineering) but there is no invoice to confirm this. It
is also fitted with a Librands sports exhaust system which gives a nice muted
rumble. A hard wired battery conditioner is also fitted and a selection of
period Morgan sales brochures and books on the marque are also included, along
with an owner’s handbook.
Now showing 41,268
miles, this well-maintained Plus 8 looks really lovely with gleaming paintwork
and is only reluctantly for sale due to the vendor’s health issues. Starting
promptly and running beautifully as we have moved it around on site, with good
3.6 bar oil pressure, it looks excellent value at the modest guide price
suggested.
