Lot Ended
Description
Only 43,200 miles indicated; one of the last Capris ever made;
for recommissioning following 17 years in dry storage; engine turns; smart
interior; nice winter project
Supplied new
by Clive Jones Motors of Cardiff in March 1987, this Capri must be among the
last batch made as the very last Laser came off the Cologne production line in
November 1986 (UK production had ended at the Halewood plant in 1976, all
subsequent Capris being built in Germany).
The
run-out Laser trim package ran from 1984 – 1986 and included a six-gauge
instrument pod, a clock on the centre console, 5-speed gearbox, 4-spoke RS alloy
wheels, rear boot spoiler, an electric aerial and colour-coded grille and
mirrors. Two SOHC four-cylinder engines were available, a 73bhp 1.6 (as here)
and a 99bhp 2.0.
The V5C records five former
keepers, our vendor acquiring the car from his next-door neighbour in 2006. At
this point the car was in good running order with an MOT until September 2007
with just a few advisories which you can view by typing the registration number
into the MOT check website.
Our vendor tucked
the car away in his garage, his plan being to tidy up a couple of areas of the
bodywork and use the car for shows. As so often happens, life got in the way and
17 years later the vendor (now in his 70s) has finally realised that he will
never get round to doing the car up, hence it’s appearance in this
sale.
The car shows only 43,157 miles on the
clock which is said to be correct and although there is insufficient documentary
evidence to warrant this, it seems plausible given the condition of the interior
which is remarkably well-preserved. As you can see in the photos, the bodywork
would benefit from some localised attention here and there and the paintwork
needs a good polish.
We have made no attempt
to get the car running but we are told that it was last started about 5 years
ago and it still turns over easily on the key, the battery having been recharged
fairly recently. Currently on SORN, it also comes with a Haynes workshop manual
and a Capri restoration guide which will no doubt come in
handy.
On offer here with a modest reserve
(lower than the guide price suggested), it looks like a worthwhile project for
someone and shouldn’t take much to get it running again and could be tidied up
over time as desired.
