Description
Restored to concours standard in 1984 and lightly used since; recent
engine rebuild with unleaded head; 5-speed gearbox; current owner 17 years; a
wonderful example of this classic British sportscar
First
registered in Yorkshire in April 1954, this lovely MG TF was treated to a
concours standard restoration in 1984 by Hartwells Garages Ltd of Oxfordshire to
showcase the skills of their apprentices. It was then sold to a local gentleman
who was to keep it for the next 22 years.
In
2001 the engine was fully rebuilt by Brown & Gammons with new pistons,
bearings etc, the cylinder head also being rebuilt and converted to run on
unleaded fuel, the bill for this lot coming to £2,335. A stainless steel exhaust
system was also fitted in the same year, along with much other
work.
In 2006 the car went to MG specialist
Peter Edney for a 5-speed gearbox conversion. While it was there various other
jobs were also carried out including an overhaul of the carbs; new water pump;
new rear springs; new wheel bearings; new fuel pipes and water hoses;
rectification of the Autumn Red paintwork; underside steam cleaned and waxoiled;
new set of carpets; leather seats refurbished; full service plus various other
jobs, the bill for this lot coming to £5,619.
Our vendor acquired the car in November 2006 when the odometer
(which had presumably been set to zero during the 1984 restoration) was showing
c.11,000 miles, according to the MOT history online. During his 17-year
ownership the car has only covered another 4,660 miles and has been used in fine
weather only, being kept garaged and Carcooned when not in
use.
Riding on a set of chrome wire wheels shod
with a matching set of Firestone tyres with plenty of tread, it also has a
chrome luggage rack on the back, a MotaLita woodrim steering wheel, wheel
changing kit, tool roll, original owner’s handbook and sundry useful spares. A
black canvas soft top and a tonneau cover are also present and in good
condition.
As you can see in the photos, the
car looks absolutely wonderful and has been starting promptly and running
beautifully as we have moved it around on site, with good 50psi oil pressure.
Although it no longer needs one, it has an MOT until July 2024.
Altogether a fine example of this charismatic
British sportscar, with few owners and some choice upgrades, which no doubt has
another 70 years of useful life ahead of it.
