Description
Delightful aluminium-bodied sports Austin; correct 65-type engine;
older restoration in super order; rare, fast and fun
First
registered in October 1933, this Sports 65 was living in the London area in the
1950s, at which point it was a relatively young car. The buff logbook shows a
string of owners over the years, the car eventually retiring from the road in
1980.
It was to live in storage for the next 23 years, when a full
restoration commenced, a job which was to take its owner just two years. Our
vendor acquired it in 2012 and set about finding a more appropriate engine for
the car, this little 65 having lost its original at some time in its life
which had been replaced by a standard unit.
Patience pays off
and he was eventually able to find a correct 'ribbed' 65 crankcase (just 3
numbers different from its original!) which was duly installed. This
retains its correct pressure-fed crank and comes fitted with a 9C cylinder head
(bronze coated) and correct 30VE1 carburettor.
The gearbox has the
correct sports ratios and the final drive is 5.625:1, allowing the car to run as
Standard classification in VSCC events.
Complete with spare wheel, tools,
hood and tonneau, this impressive factory sports model looks very smart and
offers plenty of scope to use in 750MC, VSCC and Austin Register
events.
