Description
Current owner 37 years; good running order
Launched by
BMC in 1958 to replace the bulbous Austin A35, the A40 Farina was a strikingly
different car with sharp, modern lines penned by Pininfarina of
Italy.
Powered by the trusty A-Series 948cc
engine and with a top speed of 80mph, the A40 was a great export success for
BMC, even in the USA where it was quaintly marketed as 'The Gayest Economy Sedan
Ever'. Rugged, light and reliable, the A40 was extensively used in competition
and has lately had something of a renaissance thanks to historic saloon car
racing.
This A40 Farina has a plaque on the
dash suggesting that it was supplied by Austin dealers Ross Bros. Ltd of Ben
Rhydding in West Yorkshire although it was first registered in Carmarthenshire
in April 1961. Nothing is known of the early history of the car but our vendor
acquired it way back in 1986.
Although it comes
with no service history other than a receipt for a new windscreen in 1994, we
are told that it has also had a recent brake overhaul. Two old MOTs from 1996
and 2000 show that it has only covered around 200 miles in the last 25 years.
Other documents include the V5C, an original driver’s handbook, workshop manual
and repair charges booklet.
As you can see in
the photos, it appears to be in reasonably good shape both inside and
out, although the paint finish is not quite as shiny as it could be. Driven some
20 miles to the sale, it has been starting promptly and running well as we have
moved it around on site. On offer here at no reserve, the best bid takes it
home.
