Description
Reputedly one Italian owner from new until 2020; recent glass-out
repaint and major service including new radiator, brakes, tyres and battery;
Gordini wheels; a cracking example of this quirky French flyweight
Renault’s
answer to the Citroen 2CV, the flimsy and frugal 4 was in production for 30
years (1961 – 1992). But considering that they made over 8 million of them, it’s
amazing how rarely you see one on the road these days. It seems that there are
fewer than 600 in the UK today, only half of which are taxed.
This little beauty dates from 1989 and we are
informed by the vendor that it had just one Italian owner from new until 2020, a
Milanese pâtissier who presumably used it to carry his cupcakes. Whatever, it
comes with various Italian documents which may or may not substantiate this tale
but, ci scusiamo, our knowledge of Italian is not up to the job of
proving it one way or another.
What is certain
is that the car has recently benefited from a good deal of expenditure, as
detailed in an Italian invoice on file (dated February 2019) and in a letter
from the previous owner (dated June 2022 and written in pidgin English) who we
are told inherited the car from Signor Cupcake.
This included a glass-out repaint; new bumpers; new door handles;
new window and tailgate rubbers; new radiator; reconditioned starter motor;
rebuilt carburettor; new brakes; new battery; new set of tyres and a full
service. There is also a reference to new front fenders (wings?). We have used
Google translate to decipher most of these details so you will need to make your
own minds up on all of them.
Fortunately, the car can speak for itself and it is certainly a
bella macchina. Our vendor imported it into the UK in 2022 with all
duties paid and spent £700 on a full service and a new MOT which is valid until
August 2023.
Looking very purposeful in its
Renault Service livery with sporty Gordini alloys, this freshly rejuvenated
French flyweight has been starting promptly and running well as we have moved it
around on site.
