Description
Oh-so-cool late-model 2nd Gen Trans Am with 4.9 V8 from
longterm tenure; in the UK since 1981
Dating
from 1980, this Pontiac Firebird Trans Am has been in
the UK almost since new, registered here in June 1981 and is finished in a deep
gloss black, adorned with that famous Golden Eagle symbol and rides on period
correct 15” cross-lace alloy wheels finished in gold. It has a Targa top
with removable glass roof sections.
Having
de-coded the VIN (2W87TAN141610) we have ascertained the car is a ’79-80 series
(2W) with the ‘87 Coupe’ body (87), originally had the 4.9 litre V8 Turbo engine
(T), was built in 1980 (A) at the Norwood, Ohio factory (N) and is production
number 141610.
Under the hood presently we find
a naturally aspirated 4.9 Pontiac V8 engine driving the rear wheels via
three-speed Turbo-Hydrmatic TH350 automatic transmission.
Inside, we find a classy, comfortable and period charcoal cloth
interior with seating for four, electric windows, manual mirrors, polished gauge
surround with cool-sounding Radial Tuned Suspension badge, retro-fit oil
pressure gauge and Goodmans radio/Cassette player.
The car shows 97,574 miles and presents well given its age. Our vendor has spent much of his
ownership slowly restoring the car, the bodywork has a fabulous deep gloss
although there are some signs of the passage of time with some marks, cracks and
small blisters as pictured but nothing that should cause undue stress. One issue the vendor did have was with
bonnet fitment, he has been unable to have the bonnet sit perfectly flush
despite many attempts so has lived with it as is (see pics).
The car started, stopped and ran although it would clearly benefit
from a tune-up given its not seen much recent use and was a little stutter – no
doubt the Offenshauser intake and Holley carbs need a
fettle.
The history file includes the V5C
recording 20 previous keepers to our man, a current MOT valid until March 2024
recording just two minor advisories, an old MOT and ream of bills for parts
purchased by our vendor dating back at least ten years totalling a considerable
amount. The most recent documented work was in April 2023 at a cost of
£960 which included a strip and rebuild of the carb, a replacement steering
idler arm, spark plugs, dipstick and tube plus replacement headlight
unit.
