1958 Wolseley 15/50
Only 16,000 miles
indicated which seems likely to be correct; recent repaint but
otherwise in wonderfully original condition throughout; a proper time
warp at a properly modest guide price!
Only in
production from 1956 – 1958, the Wolseley 15/50 was virtually identical to the
MG Magnette but with more upmarket trim including a polished walnut dash and
door cappings, leather seats and an illuminated Wolseley radiator badge. The
single-carb 1.5 BMC B-Series engine produced 55bhp and gave the car a top speed
of 78mph.
This lovely Wolseley 15/50 was sold
new by Arthur Prince Garages of Loughborough to first owner William Howard of
the same town in April 1958. The original buff logbook shows that he kept the
car until 1972 when ownership transferred to Allan Howard of Wolverhampton –
presumably another family member.
The original
service book shows that the car was serviced by Prince Garages five times up to
1966 by which time it had still only covered 3,211 miles. Old MOTs show that by
1974 this total had risen to 15,729 miles and it seems that the
Wolseley was then put into storage where it was to remain for many
years.
In 2004 it was MOT’d again at 15,779
miles and was then put back into storage. Our vendor acquired the car in 2015
and put it through another MOT by which time the mileage was 15,941. The
original RAY 314 registration number was taken off and replaced with the current
208 UXV.
The car was then treated to a bare
metal repaint in the original black and much of the brightwork was rechromed.
The vendor states that the bodywork was in excellent condition, with no welding
required and no filler either! As you can see in the photos, the panel gaps are
still as good today as they would have been when it first left the factory.
Since the repaint the car has been carefully
stored as part of a collection of fine cars owned by the vendor. Sadly the
odometer has recently stopped working but the vendor states that it has done no
more than 300 miles during his ownership so the current indicated mileage is
more or less correct.
Remaining in wonderfully
original condition throughout, it was driven some 30 miles to the sale and has
been running sweetly as we have moved it around on site with good 60psi oil
pressure. Supplied with its original handbook, service book and BMC workshop
manuals, this must surely be one of the best-preserved Wolseley 15/50s
remaining. On offer here at a very modest guide price (little more than the
cost of the repaint, we wager), it looks an absolute steal and will draw
admiring glances wherever it goes.
