Description
1969 Volkswagen Beetle 1500
From a deceased
estate; two owners from new, the current since 1972; 71,000 miles with huge
history file; never restored; a proper timewarp that has won awards for
originality; driven 80 miles to the sale; one for the Bug
collector!
As the VW
Heritage Certificate confirms, this VW Beetle 1500 was built in Belgium in
January 1969 for the UK market and was finished in the same Chinchilla grey
paint that it wears to this day. The first owner bought the car from VW main
agents Humphris of Oxford in March 1969 and was to keep it until September 1972
by which point it had covered 50,000 miles, the service book showing that it was
serviced no fewer than 17 times during this period, always by Humphris, giving
an average service interval of just 2,900 miles.
It was then acquired by the current owner, the Humphris purchase
invoice showing that it cost him the princely sum of £673 including seat belts
and road tax. He was to keep the car for the next 50 years, the odometer
currently showing just over 71,000 miles which is warranted by 21 old MOTs and
dozens of maintenance invoices on file.
An
enthusiastic member of the Oxfordshire VW Owner’s Club, our vendor kept the car
garaged and looked after it religiously, taking it to many shows and winning
awards for condition/originality. It seems that the car has never been restored,
although the bumpers, headlamp bezels and speedo bezel were all rechromed in
2000. Even the Chinchilla paintwork appears to be largely original with just a
smattering of stone chip touch-ups here and there.
On offer here from a deceased estate, this Beetle is in wonderfully
sound and original condition throughout and was driven over 80 miles to the
sale. A proper time capsule with an exemplary history file and sundry useful
spares, it now only needs a caring third owner who can continue to preserve it
for future generations to enjoy.
