1969 Rover P5B Coupe
Nice old example from
long term ownership and private collection in Ireland; driven 50 miles to the
sale
Dating from April 1969 this appealing Rover
P5B Coupe features of course, the Buick based Rover V8 and is finished in
Admiralty Blue sat upon period correct Rostyle steel wheels.
Under the bonnet, we find the typical 3,528cc Rover V8 which
reputedly developed 158bhp and 280NM of torque providing the P5B with ample
performance for its day, with drive sent to the rear via three-speed Borg Warner
Type 35 automatic transmission.
Inside, we find
a beige leather interior showings signs of age, yet still offering surprising
comfort.
The car has come to us from a private
collection in Ireland, yet has remained on its UK plates and was driven to the
sale from Birmingham by the vendor’s agent.
The
history file includes an old style V5 showing four former keepers, the current
since March (according to the V5 we have on file, confirmed by an Experian
check), four old MOTs and a selection of historic bills.
One note/bill on file suggests works were undertaken for the
registered keeper at a cost of some
£6,588 including replacement sill sections and jack tubes, inner and outer
D-posts plus rear inner wings, new A-posts and front inner wings, replacement
door skins, replacement engine with second hand unit plus further works as
detailed although this note is undated, the work was carried out by R.J.
Spratley Rover specialist of the West Midlands, however Its likely this bill is
rather historic given it references a fax number.
Other bills on file from the same Specialist reference additional
restorative works all dated around the late 90s for the car totalling many
thousands of pounds. We also find a
purchase invoice dated March 1996 for £2,800 and other sundry
bits.
Starting promptly and running well as we
moved it around for these shots, this P5B shows some signs of age and would
likely benefit from a degree of recommissioning and general tidy up, but these
attractive old cars have a loyal and devoted following having been a major part
of British life across the board from the Queen to Thatcher to your man next
door through the 60s and 70s.
