Only
700 miles from build; Gardner Douglas Mk3 kit with stiff triangulated backbone
chassis; 6.3 V8; Tremec 5-speed box; Willans harnesses; SVA/IVA
certified
The
Lincolnshire firm of Gardner Douglas have been supplying high quality Cobra
replica kits since 1990. The GD Mk3, as here, uses a stiff triangulated backbone
chassis with Jaguar suspension and a GRP semi-monocoque body mounted on top.
This is powered by a GM 6.3-litre V8 driving through a Tremec 5-speed
manual box and weighs around 980kg all up. The basic kit cost £25k+VAT
(self-build) or £45k+VAT (ready-built).
This
particular car is the second from last Mk3 built before it was replaced by the
Mk4 and was acquired in kit form by the first owner in 2002. Passing to a new
owner, it was finally SVA/IVA certified in April 2013 and issued with a V5C
which records it as a 2013 Gardner Douglas Sports.
Power
comes from a 1979 GM 5.7 V8 which has been fitted with a stroker kit to increase
the capacity to 6.3. It is also fitted with 4-barrel Edelbrock carb, aluminium
heads and roller rockers. The gearbox is a Tremec 5-speed manual, suspension is
courtesy of Jaguar and the leather bucket seats have Willans harnesses. A
tonneau cover is also included.
Since the
build was completed the car has only covered around 700 miles. Its most
recent MOT expired in November 2020 and there are various tidying jobs to
do. We noticed a chuffing noise from the engine which could be as simple as a
manifold gasket (see video) and there are some areas, particularly the wiring,
which could do with a tidy up here and there.
The car comes with a
huge file of invoices, original Gardner Douglas brochures and build
manuals. It is very low, very loud and presumably very fast - not a car for
the shrinking violet and guaranteed to set pulses
racing.
