Description
1972 Triumph TR6
Fully
restored in 1996 and only 16,500 miles since; uprated Bosch fuel injection
system; unleaded head; overdrive; stainless steel exhaust; current owner 19
years; runs very sweetly
As the Heritage
Certificate confirms, this TR6 PI was built in March 1972 and was supplied new
via EW Hatfield of Sheffield. A 150bhp CP model, it was originally New White
with a black Ambla interior and came with overdrive, disc wheels and a heater.
From 1989 – 2000 the car was owned by a Mr
Stanford of Kingswinford, a shot blaster by trade, who treated it to a five-year
nut-and-bolt restoration which was completed in 1996. The full extent of the
work carried out is far too detailed to list in full here but is amply
documented in many invoices and over 200 photos on file. Highlights include:
Full body restoration with many new panels;
chassis restored and strengthened around front suspension turrets, front radius
arm mountings and rear differential mountings; all cavities wax injected; bare
metal repaint in Sapphire Blue cellulose.
Engine and fuelling system fully overhauled; gearbox and overdrive
rebuilt with new synchro rings etc; rear axle overhauled; suspension rebuilt and
uprated; steering rack reconditioned with new track rod ends etc; full brake
system overhaul; new wiring; stainless steel exhaust.
Interior fully retrimmed; new seat foams and covers; new walnut
dash; inertia reel seatbelts; hood frame shot blasted and repainted; new mohair
hood and hood bag.
Once the restoration was
completed and the car was back on the road, the odometer was showing 64,671
miles, a total which has since risen to 81,273 miles.
Other invoices suggest that the engine was rebuilt again in
December 2002 (at c.66,500 miles) with new piston rings, big end bearings, main
bearings etc. The fuel injection system was also rebuilt and uprated with Bosch
(rather than Lucas) parts at around the same time which cost £1,277. In January
2017 (at c.79,800 miles) the cylinder head was rebuilt and converted to run on
unleaded fuel.
The current owner (now in a care
home) acquired the car in 2003 and has looked after it well, lots of invoices
showing regular upkeep by Feckenham Garage with the odd job also carried out by
Worcester Classic Cars. Most recently it had a new clutch slave cylinder and a
new battery in 2020 and a new alternator in November 2021.
There are 29 old MOTs on file, the last issued in July 2021 with
just two minor advisories (‘slight play in steering column bush; parking brake
efficiency only just met’) since when the car has only covered some 50 miles.
As you can see in the photos, the TR6 still
looks very presentable some 26 years and 16,500 miles since it was restored,
although a fussy owner might want to repaint both flanks of the car. We also
noted that the boot is difficult to close properly because the upper latch has
come loose.
Starting promptly and running very
sweetly indeed as we have moved it around on site, with good 60psi oil pressure,
this well-maintained TR6 looks like a tempting prospect at the sensible guide
price suggested.
