1979 Mercedes-Benz 350SE (W116)

Standing since at least 2016; last MOT expired July 201; an ideal candidate for some restorative works or as a donor car

Dating from August 1979, this later model W116 series hails from the flagship line of Mercedes saloons of the period and features the M116 3.5-litre V8 engine (as found in the SL series, in 350SL form) and is one of 51,100 350SE’s built.

In a somewhat forlorn state, the car has been sitting unused, garaged since at least 2016 and comes to us from a local vendor who never quite found the time to get the car back on the road.  He told us that he had the car running with some fuel down the intake and has since brought a battery and can of fuel for any viewers or the buyer.

Finished in silver and sitting on its original 14” Mexican Hat alloy wheels, the car shows signs of corrosion around both rear arches, sill ends and rear lower quarters and would clearly benefit from some restorative work.  The interior looks dry and in relatively good order considering its age, mileage of 144,373 and time in storage.  The seats are of blue velour with matching blue carpets, dash and console plus, we find Zebrano wood trim, electric front and rear windows, seat back net pockets, electric sunroof, original Grundig radio cassette, heated rear screen and automatic transmission.

The car sits level and looks straight bar the aforementioned areas of blistering and would no doubt restore back to her former glory with some time, effort and expenditure.

The history file includes the V5C revealing eight former keepers to the vendor who has owned the car since September 2006, a few old invoices from 2007, 2011 etc and nine old MOTs. The last MOT expired in July 2013 recording two advisories for corrosion to the back end.

A worthy project, these old Mercedes were built like tanks, have a certain charm and worth saving.
