1990 Ford Escort XR3i Cabriolet (MkIV)

Ever so 80's in trendy white; recent restorative works including RS Turbo body kit, wheels and vents; repaint and other useful bits; showing 36,801 miles

Dating from 1990, this later model MkIV escort XR3i Cabriolet looks to have been recently partially restored by the last owner with a note on file (at 28,000 miles, undated) suggesting the car was re-painted in Diamond White (it was originally white) with an RS Turbo body kit and badging being fitted at the same time including bonnet with vents, wheels and bumpers.

Under the bonnet, we find the stock Bosch fuel-injected 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels via five-speed manual transmission.  The note refers to the engine having been treated to new leads, filters and a service plus fitment of new brakes.  There is also mention of any welding required having been done as well as new sound deadening to the floor pans.

The soft-top is, we gather also new and the mechanism was treated to new hydraulic pipes however, we found the roof operated very slowly and then got stuck half way down so we released the pressure on the manual over ride and have left the roof in the down position so this will likely need some attention.

The car presents well but would no doubt benefit from some final tinkering and completion with the boot lock absent, the wheels likely benefitting from a refurb and the car given a good shake down and test run.  The interior looks tidy and complete bar fitment of an aftermarket Alpine stereo. The odometer showing 36,801 miles which is unsupported with online records only dating back to 2006 at which time the car had covered 23,717 with no test recorded between 2007 and 2021.

The history file includes only the V5C recording 7 former keepers and that the car was imported in September 1991 but built in 1990.  The current MOT is valid until July 2022 with no advisories recorded.  These blue-collar Ford’s have a cult following with values soaring in recent years and this XR3i Cabriolet could offer someone lots of fun, some light tinkering and potential investment return.
