1996 Mercedes-Benz E280 Estate (S124)
Smart
280 estate with seven-seats from the final month of production with considerable
history and regular spend by doting owners
Dating from June 1996, this rather smart late model 280TE Mercedes
hails from the final month of production of the W124 series estate (S124) which
was introduced in 1985 and as such, is a desirable, face-lift late production
example.
Finished in Azurite Blue and riding
upon it original 15" eight-hole polished face alloy wheels the car looks so
well, little would you expect to see it has actually covered 217,153 miles given
its lovely cosmetic appearance – evidently a cherished
example.
Higher mileage though it may be, it is
certainly not uncommon to see over 200k on a W124 series, with many
having recorded over 1million Km.
Inside, we
find grey cloth trim showing surprisingly little signs of obvious wear or age,
walnut trim, electric front and rear windows, electric sunroof, manually
adjusted seats, electric mirrors, grey over mats, dual zone climate with no A/C,
Mercedes Audio 10 Radio/CD player, heated rear screen, rear wash/wipe and of
course optional but very useful fold away boot seats giving capacity for 7 if
needed.
Under the bonnet, we find the proven
2.8 litre M104.942 six-cylinder petrol engine mated to four-speed automatic
transmission with Sports and Economy modes.
The
history file includes the current V5C showing just four former keepers to
our vendor who has enjoyed the car for the past few years, an old V5C, 16 old
MOTs and a selection of invoices for parts and routine maintenance dating back
to Yr.2000 including £1,455 spent on replacement rear diff seals by MB of Oxford
in March 2011, new ECU, coils and alternator in Sept-2011 by MB Oxford at an
eye-watering cost of £4,100, rear suspension overhaul by MB of Swindon in July
2013 costing £3,375, new windscreen wiper motor and four new tyres in April
2014 by MB of Swindon costing £1,496, new exhaust and fluid cooler lines for the
auto ‘box in June 2015 costing £2,324 by MB of Swindon
again.
The annual visits to MB of Swindon
continued with annual services and further works undertaken including welding to
the NSR floor and OSF inner wing area, wheel refurb and annual service in July
2018 at a cost of £1,813 plus we find a purchase invoice for the car dated
January 2011 at 83,400 miles for £7,950 from Classic Mercedes specialist Charles
Ironside. The current MOT is valid until February 2023 with just one
advisory recorded for a ‘brake pipe corroded or covered in grease/other
material’.
Clearly well cared, it’s no surprise
it is in the condition we see here today.
We gather the car has been treated to two new genuine Mercedes-Benz
front wings in recent years but there is no invoice on file to support
this. The car started immediately
and appeared to run as it should, feeling eager and solid as we moved it around
for these images.
A smart, late model E280
estate in a desirable colour – a proper Mercedes to use and
enjoy.
