Description
1970 BMW 2000 SA
Incredibly rare South
Africa-built car; owned in Malaysia since 2016 and recently brought over to the
UK; all NOVA details on file
Presented here is a 2000 Sudafrika, one
of the rarest of the BMW variants.
To know the history of how this model
came about, one has to go all the way back to 1883, when Hans Glas was a small
machinery manufacturer in Bavaria. After the second world war, the demand for
vehicles was high and Glas started to specialise in Micro Cars of the day such
as the iconic Goggomobil in 1955.
During the 1960s, Glas tried to go
upmarket, producing a range of more familiar GT coupes and saloons, aimed
squarely at the middle to upper class clientele. Sooner than later, there
was too much money going out and not enough coming in, so, along with access to
handy patents they had registered, the company was absorbed by the BMW Group in
about 1966.
The following year, the Glas BMW models were discontinued, so
as not to compete with their other core models, but it was not the end for them.
Johannes Hermanus Pretorius, a BMW importer in South Africa arranged to have all
the knocked down parts - including ready built engines and gearboxes to be
shipped off to the Cape where up to 10,000 of the 1800 and 2000 models were
produced and sold. There are thought to be very few left in South Africa,
let alone in Germany or the UK, so this is considered a particularly exotic and
rare machine. In fact, the Glas register records only 11extant!!
This
2000SA was shipped from South Africa to Malaysia in 2016, presumably to be
part of a private collection as the condition then and now is very
impressive.
Right hand drive of course because of its South African
heritage, it shows just under 30,000 miles and comes with automatic
transmission. It is on offer with no paperwork other than the all important
NOVA number (only brought from Malaysia to the UK late last year) - so if
it remains in the UK, registration should be fairly straight forward with the
help of the BMW club who ought to be able to provide a dating
certificate.
If you have a large collection of BMWs, we bet you
don’t have one of these!
