1997 Austin FX4 Fairway Taxi

From the last year of the classic FX4 Austin; recently received a considerable restoration and repaint costing in excess of £6,000

Launched in 1958 by the Austin Motor company, the iconic FX4 taxi was the result of a collaboration between Mann & Overton, the London-based taxi dealers, Carbodies who assembled them and Austin who provided the running gear.

This classic 1997 FX4 style cab comes from the final year of FX4 production and was purchased by a private owner in 2016 and used for family trips into London. Seating seven in style, it has had the interior partition glass removed to enable front to rear conversation to be slightly easier.

The interior is in light grey fabric with red piping, complete with optional folding passenger seat. With the odometer reading 396,000 miles, it has covered a fair distance and the wear and tear inside does show this. That said, since being purchased from Brightwells in 2017, it has been treated to a spectacular new ‘black cab’ respray and some considerable restoration work.

Invoices on file total just over £6,000 covering a reconditioned near side front door being fitted, 138 hours of corrosion and welding repairs, fitting of a new rear windscreen and of course the aforementioned repaint.

Currently running and driving as should be expected, it has fairly recently passed an MOT, which runs until September next year. A couple of minor advisories can be seen online regarding slight corrosion to the brake pipes so nothing too serious!
