Description
1988 Mercedes-Benz 300SL (R107)
Late example
of the much coveted R107 here in deisrable 3.0 guise in white with black trim
showing just 74,327 miles
Supplied new by Normand
(Mayfair) Ltd of Park Lane, London to a Mrs I. Abuzuineh of W14, London in May
1988 this late model R107 series 300SL is finished in desirable Arctic White
with Black Mohair hood, removable factory hard top also in Arctic White and
rides on its original 15-hole 15-inch flat face MB alloy wheels.
Under
the bonnet, we find the proven 188bhp 3.0 litre straight-six engine developing
225Nm of torque with SOHC and Simplex timing chain driving the rear wheels via
4-speed automatic transmission utilising Bosch KE-jetronic fuel injection for a
more reliable drive.
Inside, we find contrasting black leather interior,
walnut trim and optional air conditioning, rear seats and outside temperature
gauge in place of the central air vent in additional to standard electric
windows, electric passenger mirror and manual driver’s mirror plus front fog
lights.
Showing just 74,327 miles the current V5C shows just 3 previous
owners, however copy old registration docs from DVLA on file suggest this might
well be incorrect, with at least 4 previous owners to the current of nearly
10 years.
The history file also includes the owner’s pack with manual and
service book revealing an impressive 19 stamps including PDI, the last by
‘Mercedes Benz Specialists’ at 73,319 miles in June 2018. A print-out on file
details all service/mot/repair history complied by the current owner dating from
May 1988 when new, right through to June 2017 at 71,719 miles. Highlights
include a bulkhead repair, rust proofing and transmission service in 2013 at
67,014 miles, front brake callipers in 2014, fitment of a stainless steel
exhaust in 2015 costing £816 and refurbished rear callipers in 2017.
We
also find a purchase receipt from July 1999 at 33,000 miles and purchase price
of £19,995, confirmation of fitment of a Centurion Immobiliser in August 1999,
new soft-top in 2009 and an email trail relating to works carried out costing
c.£2,500 for welding repairs, fitment of a new alternator, rust proofing and
other works in 2018 by Redditch based R107 specialist Steve Griffin of
Merc-Tec.
Furthermore, we also find some photos and an impressive 19 old
MOTs plus the current, valid until May 2022 with no advisories recorded. The MOT
history suggests the car has covered less than 2,000 miles in the last 4 years.
Also included with this Lot is a rather nice Mercedes tailored car cover,
pictured in the boot.
This svelte and stylish convertible hails from the
final 2 years of production and is widely considered to be the best of
the R107 generation of cars and as such, the most desirable. With values
climbing healthily in recent years – we think this is one to enjoy and watch
grow in value.
