1974 Jaguar XJ6L 4.2 Automatic
Hidden away in
storage for the last 15 years showing just 44,449 miles by its sole owner from
new; lovely and unmolested
When it was unveiled in
1968, the XJ6 caused a press sensation, offering an astonishing level of
equipment, handling, comfort and silence, together with the traditional Jaguar
attributes of performance and value for money to match its good looks. It
immediately made every other car look over-priced and old-fashioned. Jaguar had
done it again.
The XJ range was refreshed late in 1973 with the
introduction of the Series II. The new car featured a sleeker body shell which
had a smaller front grille to allow for higher front bumpers, required to meet
the new US regulations. A front air intake below the bumper, new lights and a
revised interior with much better switchgear and heating system completed the
comprehensive list of revisions.
This August 1974 4.2 XJ6 L must be among
the earliest Series II examples with the ‘XJ6 L’ nomenclature before Jaguar
dropped the short-wheel base ahead of them standardising the longer wheelbase
bodyshell across the range in 1975.
This smart example has remained
hidden away in a warm, dry storage unit for at least the last 15 years and shows
just 44,500 miles from new and is being sold by the owner’s daughter following
his sad demise. They recall riding in the car when much younger and him enjoying
it often, but only in fine weather.
The car was last taxed, and thus run
in late 2005 when it was put into storage. The condition is astounding and is a
real ‘time-warp’ car – open the door and it looks almost like new, with a lovely
leather smell, the seats most inviting. The bodywork too, appears excellent as
with the chrome work. Under the bonnet all looks well, neat, tidy and without
the usual disarray and deterioration common with cars that have been stood. The
underside too looks surprisingly ship shape – we doubt it would take too much to
coax into life and have running, however, no effort has been made to start the
car given how long it has been standing.
The family have been unable to
locate the history file or V5C at the time of going to press, but if anything
comes to light it will be sent on to us, so buyers must assume there is no
paperwork and a new V5C must be applied for with the relevant DVLA form and
cheque for £25.
