1966 MGB Roadster MkI

Reserve
Imported from sunny California in 2003 and little
used since; converted to RHD; driven to the sale
As a letter from the BMIHT Archive confirms, this MGB
Roadster MkI was built at the Abingdon factory in October 1966 and was
originally a LHD model destined for the American market. A copy of the American
Certificate of Title shows that it was with an owner in sunny California by
1985, a gentleman who appears to have kept it until 2003 when it was shipped
back to the UK with all duties paid.
It seems that it was kept in storage for the next 15 years
or so because it wasn’t UK registered until August 2018. Our vendor acquired the
car in December 2018 (by which time it had already been converted to RHD), his
intention being to prepare it for classic car rallies. As he already had several
other classics to play with, doing up the MGB never really got to the top of the
list and he has now decided to pass the car on to someone who can give it the
more regular use that it is crying out for.
During his ownership it has been treated to various new
parts (radiator; dynamo; front brake calipers; coolant, fuel and brake hoses;
door cards; interior door handles and window winders; oil/temperature gauge;
battery cut-off switch; seat belts etc) but has otherwise led a very quiet life,
being mainly kept in storage.
Driven some 15 miles to the sale on one of the hottest
days of the year, we are told that it ran well throughout with good oil pressure
and temperature, although the vendor advises that the overdrive, which
previously worked perfectly well, seems to have packed up for some reason.
Starting promptly and running sweetly as we have moved it
around on site, with good 60psi oil pressure, it appears to be in generally good
order throughout with particularly nice black leather seats piped in white.
Being offered here at no reserve, this nice early MGB now
needs an enthusiastic new owner who can actually get out there and drive it, top
down, shades on, over the long hot summer that undoubtedly lies ahead of us!
