1971 Volkswagen T2 'Devon' Camper
Charming and
well-loved example with original Devon interior fittings; canopy and
pop-top
Dating from September 1971, this cool old T2 must have seen
an adventure or two and many, many smiling happy faces covering thousands of
jolly miles. Powered here, by the proven 1.6 four-pot petrol, this
original 'Devon' version looks very 'beachy' and still retains its original
interior fixtures and fittings and pop-top - highly prized by those seeking to
retro fit in to their modern recreations.
The history file
looks ample and includes the V5C showing four previous keepers and a host
of invoices. Recent works of note include a £693 spend on MOT, service with new
fan belt, brake shoes, exhaust tailpipe, ignition points, plugs, tappet
adjustment and new hazard switch. A further £754 was spent in
May 2019 on setting valve clearances, oil service, replacement of all four
ball-joints, repalcement steering idler pin and bushes, brake adjustment, new
speedo cable and rocker cover gasket. 2018 saw £427 spent on another lube
service with repair to the indicator stalk and washers, grease of the steering
and suspension points and new alternator belt. The engine was removed in
2017 to have the dynamo replaced along with replacement voltage regulator at a
cost of £270 in addition to a further £550 spend in 2017 on a repair to the
ignition barrel wiring, new alternator and new battery.
Further bills of
merit include £632 spent in November 2016 on a repair to the gear linkage and
coupler, welding to the outriggers, replacement of rusted wheel tub splash
gaurds, welding to the driver's side front lower step, new seat belt anchorage
for the passenger side new brake flexi hose and 2 tyres. A new clutch kit
was installed in Augst 2016 along with engine removal and service with
replacement dynamo, tyres, dynamo pulley, belts and reset of the valves at a
cost of £856.
Other bills of note inlude a £1,241 spend in October
2010 on restorative bodyworks with replacement full length bay glass, early
Bay tailgate, sliding door repair section, roller, cam and tailgate rubber and
some 30 hours of labour. £1,216 spent on welding to the outriggers,
seatbelt mounts, main chassis, inner and outer sills and thorough waxoil in May
2006. A pair of new cylinder heads were fitted in May 1990 at a cost of
£370. The bills continue with more, regular spend on maintenance and parts
dating back to 1989.
An impressive 35 old MOTs on file date back to
1977 at 59,592 miles. The mileage goes up accordingly, showing 92,107
miles at MOT in 1979, then 2,078 miles in 1980 rising to 54,518 in 1989 and on
to 65,997 miles in 1997 on to 97,800 miles in 2012 and the current of 13,481
miles suggesting a total of 213,481 miles - entirely normal for one of these
love-buses. For peace of mind, it comes with a current MOT valid until October
2021 with no advisories - great for a 50 year old vehicle that's tax and MOT
exempt.
Ready to be enjoyed and for the love and coolness to continue,
its a relucant sale and was driven 50 miles to the sale without issue by our
vendor of five years. This particular VW celebrates its 50th
year of life this year and has been affectionately known as "Florence". In
addition to the history file, this Lot includes a breathable waterproof cover
(in need of some TLC, but usable), rear roof rack (pictured inside the vehicle),
box of useful spares, sun awning with fittings and essential windbreak for easy
picnicing.
For further ease of use in a modern world, its been fitted
with a 240v hook up and useful rear seat belts to keep the kids in
check.
