1982 Mercedes-Benz 280SL (R107)

Reserve
Pretty R107 in desirable red with cream; 70,000
miles; much money spent; imported from Hong Kong in 2002 and used at our
vendor's holiday home in sunny Crete for a number of years
afterwards
Dating from January 1981, this mid-production R107
features the 182bhp 2.8 litre straight six with Bosch K-Jet fuel injection and
automatic transmission. Finished in attractive bright red and riding on
flat face 15-hole alloy wheels with contrasting cream (MB-Tex) interior and
walnut trim, we find power windows, electric passenger mirror, optional rear
seats, modern CD player and colour coded factory hard-top with contrasting
black mohair hood.
Presenting well, the car started and ran as it should
as we moved it around for these images and is a reluctant sale forced by a
house move by the current owner of many years. The car was imported
from Hong Kong in January 2002 and was first MOT'd in October 2006 showing
4,399 miles, although this must be Km, the speedo only reading in Km. An
invoice on file shows the speedometer was renewed at 80,640Kms in Hong Kong by
Auto Dynamics of Western District HK with a few other jobs at a cost of
$1,125 in 2001 suggesting the total mileage to be 112,674Km (80,640Km + current
of 32,234Km) equating to 70,012 miles in total.
The MOT history shows a
gap from August 2011 to March 2017 during which time our vendor kept the car at
his property on a Greek island off sunny Crete where it was registered on Greek
plates (still present in the boot) until its return in early 2017 with just
8,000km being covered during vacation use over the 6 years. Since return,
the car was re-registered here and has seen limited use.
The history file
includes the V5C, Greek plates (reg. 5937), green Greek log book with photo of
the car; Greek service invoices, 1 HongKong MOT equivalent issued by Mazda
Motors Tokwawan Service Centre dated 27.06.2001 with registration mark
HY571, Copy HongKong log book, purchase invoice for our vendor dated 2011,
9 old MOTs the last expiring November 2020. A host of invoices
include a £3,559 spend at Mercedes-Benz Riverdale in June 2009 for the removal
and repair of the front axle at 17,710Km, £940 spent on a new black Mohair hood
in August 2007, £1,215 spent on resolving a gearbox fault in October 2008 at
14,572Km, another for 4 new tyres in June 2018 and another for a service in June
2017 at 30,751Km at a cost of £284 including new rocker cover gaskets, plugs,
oil service and exhaust rubbers.
The earliest UK history dated to
January 2002 at the time of import into Southampton with a bill for collection
and works undertaken for £352 by Vintage and Classic Restoration of Merseyside
along with a purchase receipt for the car in HK dated May 2001 and subsequent
shipping doscs/Transport Bill of Lading by D.M Consol Line dated 12th December
2001 and old HK motor vehicle licence doc which expired October 2001.
A
look online at the MOT history shows the car was presented for MOT in April 2021
at which point it failed on 6 points, and a further 9 advisories none
too scary for a 39 year old car but worthy of consideration.
