Description
1930 Rover 10/25 Saloon
Over €30,000 spent on
this car during the 90s and early 2000s; lived and registered in Ireland for
many years; shipped here for auction; presentable early British motor; runs and
drives
Described by The Light Car & Cyclecar December 1930
publication as ‘Good Performer, Adequate Equipment, Ample Accommodation and a
Good Looker, these were initially sold by Rover for £189.
Unfortunately, very
little is known about the early life of this Rover 10, although it is clear
though that it has been owned by Irish gentlemen since at least 1995. Chris
Young Classic and Modern Car Repairs and Sales of Long Melford, in Suffolk were
given the instructions to start the restoration in 1995, taking regular payments
from the Irish owner until its completion in 2001, some €30,000 later.
Work
started with a complete chassis strip, sand blasting and application of rust
proof primer. A little welding on the front cross member and complete break down
of other parts to clean, grease and re-assemble. Dash panels and gauges were all
either replaced with new or removed, cleaned up and returned. All rotten timber
being removed and replaced too.
1996 saw the engine being completely
stripped down and gearbox renewed. The body was popped back on to the chassis
and surveyed for any repairs needed to the ash frame. Doors were improved,
filled and fitted snugly to the body, while all other panels were checked,
repaired if necessary and eventually all re-painted.
Due to illness, the
restoration had to be paused and based on the large file of bills, work was
restarted in 1999, which included the manufacture of a new exhaust system,
fitting of new upholstery and the seating that you see today.
Once
transported back to Ireland it was officially registered in County Laois in 2002
residing with its very proud owner. One would hope to think he then had time to
enjoy his restored pride and joy for a number of years. It was certainly still
owned by him up until at least 2005. Joining a collection in Dublin fairly
recently, it is now being offered for sale to fund some potential new additions
to the expanding collection. Looking very reasonably priced here and although it
is not entirely original, everything is done, she runs and drives and after all
it is a ‘Good Looker.'
